Wim Hof breathwork in Nottingham: what to expect from an ice bath session

Written by Joshua Hanson · SoulSync Wellness, Nottingham

The Wim Hof method is one of the most remarkable tools I have encountered for shifting physical and mental states rapidly. Part of its power is that the effects are undeniable and immediate. You cannot intellectualise your way through an ice bath. And the combination of the breathwork and the cold produces hormonal releases that genuinely have to be experienced to be understood.

What the Wim Hof method is

The Wim Hof method combines three elements: a specific breathwork technique, cold exposure (typically an ice bath), and mindset training. It was developed by Wim Hof, the Dutch extreme athlete known as the Iceman, and has been the subject of peer-reviewed scientific research demonstrating its effects on the immune system, inflammation, and the autonomic nervous system.

The breathwork technique explained

The Wim Hof breathing technique involves 30 to 40 deep, rhythmic breaths, breathing in fully through the nose or mouth and letting the exhale go without forcing it. After the last exhale, you breathe out and hold. The breath hold continues until the urge to breathe becomes strong, at which point you take a recovery breath and hold it for 15 seconds. This constitutes one round. Most sessions involve three to four rounds.

The physiological effects are significant. The rapid breathing raises blood oxygen saturation and reduces carbon dioxide. This produces tingling, lightheadedness, and a surge of energy or warmth. The breath hold, with lungs relatively empty, extends further than most people expect, often 60 to 90 seconds, because the reduced carbon dioxide means the urge to breathe is delayed. During the retention, some people experience visual phenomena, deep stillness, or a sense of expansion.

The hormonal cascade triggered by the breathwork includes releases of dopamine, adrenaline, and endorphins. These are the same neurochemicals associated with motivation, alertness, and wellbeing.

The ice bath

Cold exposure, typically in an ice bath at two to four degrees Celsius, completes the physiological effect. Cold immersion triggers a second surge of adrenaline and dopamine, and sustained cold exposure produces elevated dopamine that can last for several hours. The effect on mood, motivation, and mental clarity is often described as remarkable.

Physically, cold exposure reduces inflammation, improves circulation, and trains the nervous system to tolerate and recover from acute stressors. Over time, this builds a general resilience to stress that extends into daily life.

The Wim Hof breathwork done before the ice bath significantly changes the experience of the cold. The nervous system is primed. The endorphin release means the cold feels different: intense, but manageable and even exhilarating, rather than simply painful.

Who the experience is for

The Wim Hof method is suitable for most healthy adults. It is contraindicated for people with cardiovascular conditions, epilepsy, and during pregnancy. Joshua is qualified to facilitate Wim Hof breathwork and ice bath experiences for groups and individuals in Nottingham and surrounding areas.

The experience is excellent for people who want to shift their relationship to stress and discomfort, build mental resilience, or simply want a powerful and memorable physical experience. It is also popular as a team or group activity for workplaces looking for something with genuine impact rather than a standard away-day.

What a session with SoulSync looks like

Group Wim Hof sessions at SoulSync begin with an explanation of the method and the physiology: no one gets in the ice bath without understanding what is happening and why. The breathwork rounds are guided together. Then participants enter the ice bath one at a time, with coaching and support throughout. The session closes with integration time: warm drinks, conversation, and time to absorb what has happened.

In-person sessions are available in Nottingham. Corporate and group bookings are available UK-wide.
