The basics

New to breathwork? Start here. These questions cover what it is, how it works, and what makes it different from other wellbeing practices.

Breathwork is the conscious, intentional use of breathing techniques to influence the body and mind. Unlike normal unconscious breathing, breathwork involves deliberately changing the pace, rhythm, depth or pattern of the breath to create specific physiological and psychological effects.

It encompasses a wide range of practices, from simple regulated breathing exercises used for stress management, to deeper connected breathing practices used for emotional processing and personal transformation.

Breathwork works because the breath is unique: it is the only autonomic function we can consciously control, giving us direct access to the nervous system, the brain and the body's stress response system.

Breathwork and meditation share some overlap but are distinct practices. Meditation typically involves observing thoughts, sensations or the breath without deliberately altering it, cultivating awareness and presence. Breathwork involves actively changing the breath to create specific physiological effects.

Meditation tends to be a quieter, more passive practice. Breathwork, particularly deeper forms, can be more active, dynamic and physical. Many people find breathwork more accessible than meditation, particularly those with busy or racing minds, because the active engagement of the breath gives the mind something specific to focus on.

Both practices support nervous system regulation and complement each other well.

Rebirthing breathwork is a specific form of connected conscious breathing that uses a continuous, circular breath pattern without pause between inhale and exhale. Sessions typically last between 60 and 90 minutes and are conducted in a safe, held environment with a trained facilitator.

Rebirthing can produce powerful physical sensations, emotional releases and shifts in perception. It is considered a deeper, more immersive form of breathwork and is most appropriate for people who feel ready to explore deeper personal work.

At SoulSync, all rebirthing sessions include thorough pre-session preparation, a carefully held space throughout, and full post-session integration support.

The Wim Hof Method combines a specific pattern of deep rhythmic breathing with breath retention and, optionally, cold water exposure. The breathing protocol involves a series of 30 to 40 deep breaths followed by a breath hold, repeated across multiple rounds.

Research has shown the method can reduce inflammation, improve immune function, increase energy and resilience, and produce significant releases of dopamine, serotonin and endorphins. It is particularly effective when combined with cold water immersion, a practice Joshua Hanson is qualified to facilitate safely.

The method is powerful and should be practised under guidance, as it can cause lightheadedness or tingling during the breathing phase.

Yes. There is a growing and substantial body of peer-reviewed research supporting the benefits of breathwork. Studies have demonstrated that controlled breathing practices reduce cortisol, lower blood pressure, improve heart rate variability, reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, improve focus and cognitive performance, and support trauma recovery.

Research on the Wim Hof Method has shown measurable effects on the immune system and inflammatory response. Polyvagal theory, developed by neuroscientist Dr Stephen Porges, provides a robust neurological framework explaining why breathwork produces the effects it does.

What breathwork
can help with

From stress and ADHD to trauma and burnout, these questions cover the specific conditions and challenges that breathwork addresses most effectively.

Breathwork is one of the most effective tools available for managing stress because it works directly on the physiological systems that produce and maintain the stress response. When we experience stress, the sympathetic nervous system activates, triggering the release of cortisol and adrenaline, increasing heart rate and preparing the body for threat.

Slow, deep, rhythmic breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system through the vagus nerve, counteracting this stress response almost immediately. Breathwork also reduces cortisol levels, lowers blood pressure, decreases heart rate, and increases heart rate variability, which is a key marker of nervous system resilience.

Unlike many stress management techniques, breathwork creates measurable physiological change within minutes.

When emotions are not fully processed, they do not simply disappear. Research in somatic psychology and neuroscience, including the work of Dr Bessel van der Kolk, shows that unprocessed emotions and stress become encoded in the body as muscular tension, postural patterns and dysregulation in the nervous system.

The breath has a direct neurological connection to the limbic system, the part of the brain responsible for emotional processing. Deeper forms of breathwork can access and release emotion stored in the body in ways that talking alone often cannot.

Many people experience spontaneous emotional releases during breathwork sessions, which represents the nervous system completing stress responses that were previously suppressed or interrupted. This is a natural and healthy process when held in a safe, trauma-informed container.

ADHD is fundamentally a condition of nervous system dysregulation, affecting attention, impulse control, executive function and emotional regulation. Breathwork addresses several of the core physiological mechanisms underlying these symptoms.

Controlled breathing increases oxygen flow to the prefrontal cortex, the area of the brain most affected by ADHD, improving focus, decision-making and working memory. Breathwork also helps regulate dopamine levels, the neurotransmitter central to ADHD, and reduces the hyperarousal and anxiety that often accompanies it.

Specific techniques including the Wim Hof method and box breathing have been shown to improve attention, reduce brain fog and support executive function. For people with ADHD who struggle with traditional mindfulness practices, breathwork offers a more active and engaging alternative that works with, rather than against, the ADHD nervous system.

Trauma is stored in the nervous system as a dysregulated state of threat response that can persist long after the traumatic event has passed. People with PTSD often experience a nervous system that oscillates between hyperarousal and hypoarousal, making it difficult to feel safe, present or regulated.

Breathwork is increasingly recognised as a powerful adjunct to trauma treatment because it works at the physiological level, directly regulating the nervous system in ways that cognitive approaches alone cannot reach. Polyvagal theory explains how the vagus nerve mediates our sense of safety and connection, and how breathwork can help restore healthy vagal tone.

Trauma-informed breathwork, as practised at SoulSync, creates a carefully structured safe container in which the nervous system can begin to process and discharge stored trauma responses. It is not a replacement for professional trauma therapy but can be a powerful complement to it.

Yes. Burnout is characterised by chronic nervous system dysregulation, emotional exhaustion and a depletion of the physiological and psychological resources needed to cope with demands. Breathwork directly addresses the nervous system component of burnout by activating the parasympathetic response, reducing cortisol, and beginning to restore the capacity for rest and recovery that burnout depletes.

It also creates space for the emotional processing that burnout often suppresses. Combined with coaching to address the patterns, beliefs and boundaries that contributed to burnout in the first place, the SoulSync approach offers a comprehensive path back to sustainable wellbeing.

Breathwork is suitable for most adults and can benefit people dealing with stress, anxiety, burnout, emotional difficulties, sleep problems, low mood, brain fog, lack of focus, trauma recovery, physical tension and a general sense of feeling disconnected from themselves.

It is also beneficial for people who feel generally well but want to deepen their self-awareness, build resilience or explore personal development. Athletes use breathwork to improve performance and recovery. Business professionals use it to manage pressure and maintain clarity. Parents use it to regulate emotional responses. People going through life transitions use it to process and integrate change.

In short, if you have a nervous system and a desire to feel better in yourself, breathwork has something to offer you.

While breathwork is safe for most people, there are some contraindications that require caution or medical clearance. Deeper breathwork practices such as connected conscious breathing or rebirthing are not recommended for people with:

Cardiovascular conditions including heart disease or high blood pressure. Epilepsy or seizure disorders. Severe psychiatric conditions including active psychosis or schizophrenia. Detached retina or glaucoma. Recent surgery or serious physical injury. Pregnancy.

People with severe anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder or a recent history of psychiatric hospitalisation should consult their doctor or mental health professional before undertaking deeper breathwork.

Milder breathwork techniques such as box breathing, extended exhale breathing and coherence breathing are generally safe for most people including many of those with the above conditions. At SoulSync, a thorough intake process is completed before every session to ensure the practice is appropriate and safe for each individual.

What to expect

Everything you need to know before your first session, from what happens in the room to what you might feel during the practice.

Every SoulSync breathwork session begins with a pre-session conversation to understand your current situation, intentions and any relevant history. This is followed by a brief explanation of the technique being used and what to expect.

The breathwork itself typically lasts between 20 and 60 minutes depending on the session type, during which you will be guided throughout. After the active breathwork, there is a period of rest and integration, followed by a post-session conversation to process whatever came up.

Sessions are held in a safe, trauma-informed container, meaning the pace and depth are always adjusted to what feels right for you. You will never be pushed beyond your comfort zone.

Experiences during breathwork vary widely between individuals and even between sessions. Common physical sensations include tingling in the hands, feet or face, warmth or coolness in parts of the body, spontaneous movement or trembling as the nervous system releases tension, and a sense of lightness or expanded awareness.

Emotionally, people may experience feelings of joy, grief, relief, peace or a sense of emotional release. Some people experience powerful insights or vivid imagery. Others simply feel deeply relaxed.

A small number of people find breathwork activating or uncomfortable, particularly if they have unprocessed trauma. This is why working with a trained, trauma-informed facilitator is important. Whatever arises is met with support and can be slowed or stopped at any point.

This depends on what you are working with and what you are looking for. A single breathwork session can produce noticeable, immediate shifts. Many people find that three to six sessions create meaningful, lasting change.

The six-session Breathwork and Coaching Series at SoulSync is designed as a structured journey that addresses a specific area of your wellbeing systematically over time. The best approach is to start with a free discovery call, which allows Joshua to understand your situation and recommend a path that makes sense for you specifically.

Massage questions

Sports massage, Swedish massage, and how bodywork fits into a wider approach to nervous system regulation.

Sports massage focuses on the muscular and soft tissue issues associated with physical activity, chronic tension and postural stress. It uses deeper pressure, targeted techniques and specific work on muscle groups to address tension, restriction, injury recovery and mobility. It is not exclusively for athletes. Anyone carrying chronic muscular tension, desk-based postural strain or physical stress can benefit significantly.

Swedish massage, by contrast, uses longer, flowing strokes across the whole body with a focus on promoting deep relaxation, improving circulation and calming the nervous system. It is gentler, more rhythmic and designed primarily for overall restoration rather than targeted muscle work.

Both are offered at SoulSync and can be combined with breathwork for an integrated approach to nervous system regulation.

Massage directly influences the autonomic nervous system by stimulating the parasympathetic response, the rest and digest state, through touch, pressure and the release of muscular tension. Research shows that massage reduces cortisol levels, increases serotonin and dopamine, lowers heart rate and blood pressure, and reduces the physical symptoms of anxiety.

The body stores stress and emotion in the muscular system, so releasing physical tension through massage also has a regulatory effect on emotional and nervous system states. When combined with breathwork, the effect is compounded, as the breath amplifies the nervous system regulation that massage initiates.

For general maintenance and stress management, a monthly massage is a good baseline for most people. If you are dealing with a specific injury, chronic tension or a period of high stress, fortnightly sessions may be more beneficial initially.

The most honest answer is that the effects of massage are cumulative. Regular sessions prevent tension from re-accumulating in the way that a single occasional session cannot. Many clients find that consistent massage alongside breathwork creates a significantly more sustained level of wellbeing than either practice alone.

Massage sessions at SoulSync are booked via Treatwell, which handles availability, booking and payment securely. You can also find the booking link directly from the Services page.

Coaching questions

What trauma-informed coaching is, who it helps, and how it differs from therapy or traditional life coaching.

Trauma-informed coaching is a coaching approach that understands how trauma and nervous system dysregulation affect a person's behaviour, beliefs, relationships and capacity to create change. Unlike traditional coaching, which often focuses purely on goals and actions, trauma-informed coaching recognises that unresolved trauma can create unconscious blocks, patterns and protective behaviours that prevent sustainable change.

At SoulSync, coaching is grounded in ILM Level 5 practice and underpinned by knowledge of polyvagal theory, somatic awareness and nervous system regulation. Sessions create a safe space for exploration without diagnosis or clinical treatment, working alongside rather than in place of any professional mental health support.

Therapy, particularly psychotherapy or counselling, is a clinical intervention delivered by a qualified mental health professional, typically focused on diagnosing and treating mental health conditions and processing past experience. It is regulated and often involves working with complex trauma, mental illness or significant psychological distress.

Coaching is a forward-focused, non-clinical practice concerned with supporting someone to move from where they are to where they want to be. It works with patterns, beliefs, goals and behaviours. At SoulSync, coaching draws on trauma-informed principles and nervous system awareness, but it is not a substitute for therapy and Joshua will always refer to appropriate professional support where needed.

Coaching at SoulSync can help with navigating major life transitions, building clarity around direction and purpose, developing healthier habits and routines, improving stress resilience and emotional regulation, working through patterns of self-sabotage or procrastination, rebuilding confidence and self-trust, and creating a more intentional approach to work and life.

It is particularly well suited to people who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or who sense that something needs to shift but are unsure where to start. Joshua has a particular interest in men's mental health and wellbeing, though coaching is open to anyone.

Yes. Breathwork and coaching sessions are available online via video call for clients anywhere in the world. Online breathwork is equally effective as in-person for most session types and many clients prefer the convenience of being in their own home, particularly for deeper sessions where having a familiar, comfortable space can support the process.

A few simple things help: avoid heavy meals for at least two hours before a session. Wear comfortable clothing. Have water nearby. For online sessions, have a mat or comfortable surface to lie on and headphones if possible for a more immersive experience.

Mentally, it helps to come without specific expectations. The breath takes you where you need to go, which is sometimes different from where you expect. An openness to whatever arises tends to produce a richer experience than arriving with a fixed agenda.
